At the moment, it takes commitment (and a good memory) for any shopper to understand food labels and put that knowledge into practice when buying food. Simpler food labels would make it much easier for consumers to make sensible decisions about salt when shopping for food.
Several simpler kinds of labelling systems have been suggested for Australian foods. In the UK, to help aid consumer understanding, many retailers and manufacturers are now labelling salt as well as sodium. AWASH aims to ascertain which system is best suited to Australian consumers, and to then lobby for its mandatory use by food manufacturers.
