Australian Division of World Action on Salt and Health (AWASH) Response to Government Salt Targets

AWASH congratulates the Australian government on yesterday's announcement of salt targets for bread and breakfast cereals and keenly anticipates hearing the salt targets for other food categories. More about: AWASH media alert-032010

Front of Pack Labelling Policy Guideline

In February 2009 the Food Regulation Standing Committee (FRSC) released a consultation paper for a Front of Pack Labelling Guideline. AWASH made a submission to this consultation paper. More about: FRSC FOPL submission - 22 March

Review of the Dietary Guidelines

The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia is currently reviewing the Dietary Guidelines for Australians and requested comments from AWASH as to current usage and suggestions for updates on these documents. Iodisation of Salt

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is proposing a new food standard for the the mandatory fortification of the food supply with iodine. In Draft Assessment, this proposal included the mandatory replacement of salt with iodised salt in breads, breakfast cereals and biscuits.

In response to the draft, AWASH made a submission to FSANZ with comments on the proposal and recommendations on the iodisation of the food supply.

The Australian House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing is conducting an inquiry into obesity in Australia.AWASH made a submission to the inquiry

Australia 2020 Summit

The Australia 2020 Summit was held on 19 and 20 April 2008. The Summit was aimed at harnessing the best ideas for building a modern Australia ready for the challenges of the 21^st century. One of the Summit topics was "Health - a long-term national health strategy - including the challenges of preventative health, workforce planning and the ageing population". AWASH made a submission to the summit.
